Skai the Passport Photographer
Hello! I'm Skai, a professional passport photographer in Singapore — a country where overseas travel feels almost like an addiction for many. My old passports often expired long before I renewed them, and in between, I would proudly tell everyone that I couldn't travel.
Truth be told, I dislike travelling. There were three reasons: I was extremely poor, I wanted to plan thoroughly as a perfectionist but never had the luxury of time, and I was too engrossed in my photography work.
My family travelled overseas a few times without me. Back then, I stayed home alone, often frustrated about meals. More often than not, I kept working at my computer, delaying mealtimes until my grumbling stomach forced me to stop.
I did understand that travelling could broaden my mind and spark new ideas. But I overestimated myself, believing I could work 24/7, 365 days a year without real rest. I burned myself out badly — even now, as I'm penning this down, I still feel the effects.
Doing passport shoots alone is far from sustainable. That said, I continue to prioritise my other photography work. But if you're someone who values professionalism, lighting, and a thoughtful process, I'll be glad to help you with your passport photo.
Skai's Vision in Passport Photography
My vision in passport photography is simple: to make something usually seen as routine feel professional, thoughtful, and reassuring. A passport photo is not just a requirement — it's an image you'll look at a few times each year, before and during your travels. With proper lighting and guidance, I aim to create passport photos that are clean, compliant, and flattering, so you can carry them with confidence.
Professional lighting makes a real difference. It reduces shadows, ensures clarity, and brings out a natural look that basic setups often miss. Even for something as straightforward as a passport photo, I believe in applying the same care and precision I bring to my other photography work, because every image should reflect quality.
Skai's Journey as a Passport Photographer
Whenever I needed a new passport, I would take the photo myself, professionally. It was tiring, but I was always proud that my passport photos looked better than most.
As a professional photographer, my family, relatives, and friends naturally turned to me whenever they needed a more professional-looking passport photo. They would come over to my house, where I set up a small home studio with proper lighting and guidance I'd learned through experience.
What surprised me was how much time each shoot actually took. Even for something so simple, I had to block off hours before and after, which meant I couldn't take on other projects that day. For a while, I hesitated to offer this service publicly.
But as more people began enquiring, I decided to help out when it was within my capacity. Along the way, I've met wonderful people who appreciate quality and value a smooth passport-making journey. It's rewarding to make new friends through something as practical as a passport photo.
ICA's Passport/ IC Photo Requirements
Singapore ICA's passport photo requirements are based on specifications by the International Standards Organisation (ISO) and the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
It's rather "troublesome" with so many rules but we have to be realistic that our IC/ passport photographs are for identification purposes. Imagine that you need to check someone who's entering your premises, you probably want him or her to look like the photograph, which must be clear enough to compare.

FAQ
- Why is doing a passport/ IC photoshoot so costly?
- Although the set-up is minimum, a substantial amount of time and effort is still required to discuss, prepare and set up the photography studio, while the timeslot has to be blocked off for your photoshoot.
I would suggest you take up a normal studio photoshoot as well and let the passport photoshoot occupy part of it. For example, you can do a professional corporate photoshoot for your LinkedIn and other professional profiles. - What should I wear for the passport/ IC photoshoot?
- A darker-coloured top will be good – avoid a white top since we're using a white backdrop.
- Can I wear glasses in my passport photo?
- It's best to remove glasses, especially tinted or reflective ones, as they may cause glare or hide your eyes. Clear lenses may be acceptable, but removing them ensures compliance with most official requirements.
- Can I smile in my passport photo?
- No broad smiles are allowed. A neutral expression with your mouth closed is required for official documents. A slight, natural look is fine as long as your features remain clear.
- How long will the passport photoshoot take?
- The session itself is usually quick, but time is needed for preparation, adjustments, and ensuring the photo meets official standards. Expect around 20–30 minutes including setup and review.
- Will you retouch my passport photo?
- No. Passport and IC photos must reflect your natural appearance. Editing/retouching is limited to technical corrections such as lighting balance or background cleanup, not altering facial features.
- Can I use the same photo for multiple documents?
- Yes, as long as the photo meets the requirements of each document (passport, IC, visa, etc.). Some countries or agencies may have stricter rules, so it's best to confirm before reuse.
- Can I opt for retouching?
- Yes, if you are comfortable with the additional fee. However, I have advised that it's best not to do any retouching, as ICA may reject altered photos. If you still choose retouching, please understand that ICA's decision is beyond our control.
- What will I get from the passport packages?
- You will be able to choose your preferred photo. I will provide you with one high‑resolution copy and another in ICA‑required resolution.
